New to queer lit, or just tired of guessing?
Here's where staff usually point first, from queer humour to the quiet classics.
Everybody starts somewhere. If you've decided you want to read more queer fiction but the sheer size of the shelf is doing your head in, this is the list we reach for first. No canon-policing, no homework — just good books that tend to land, whatever you're into.
We usually open with one question: what do you actually like to read? Because “queer fiction” isn't a genre — it's every genre, with the whole of human experience in it. There's queer literary fiction and queer beach reads, queer horror and queer romance, queer sci-fi that builds whole worlds and queer memoir that stays close to home.
Don't worry about reading the “important” ones first, either. The canon will still be there when you want it. A starter shelf is about momentum — finding the book that makes you want the next one — not about ticking boxes or proving you belong. Nobody polices the door here, and nobody's going to quiz you on it.
Fiction
- The Tiger and the Cosmonaut, Eddy Boudel Tan · A noirish BC mystery about a sibling's disappearance from a local author, and a 2025 Giller shortlister.
- Milktooth, Jaime Burnet · A queer woman in Halifax who wants a baby, and the chosen family that forms around her.
- Thia: an Eldritch Yuri Slice of Life, Tejay Liao · A Vancouver author's autistic, lesbian, eldritch-god love story. Exactly as delightful as that sounds.
- Be Gay, Do Crime, edited by Molly Llewellyn & Kristel Buckley · Sixteen stories of queer chaos. Read one on the bus, then miss your stop.
Memoir & Non-fiction
- Staying Power, Zena Sharman · A frank, tender memoir about grief, parenting, and the families queer people build. Published right here by Arsenal Pulp.
- How We Fight for Our Lives, Saeed Jones · The Stonewall Book Award winner. This is the one that'll wreck you.
- The Secret to Superhuman Strength, Alison Bechdel · A graphic memoir about a lifelong love affair with exercise, from the author of Fun Home.
- Prairie Fairies, Valerie J. Korinek · Queer life across Western Canada from 1930 to 1985. Our own backyard's history.
Romance
- Heated Rivalry, Rachel Reid · The enemies-to-lovers hockey romance everyone's been streaming. Canadian, obviously.
- The Long Game, Rachel Reid · For when you finish Heated Rivalry and need more immediately.
- Written in the Stars, Alexandria Bellefleur · A sapphic fake-dating rom-com with an astrologer and a skeptic. Happy ending guaranteed.
- The B-Side of Daniel Garneau, David Kingston Yeh · Boyfriends, hockey, and misadventures in Toronto, wrapping up a much-loved trilogy.
Young Readers
- My Shadow Is Purple, Scott Stuart (picture book) · A rhyming story about not fitting into blue or pink.
- What Makes a Baby, Cory Silverberg & Fiona Smith (picture book) · The gentle, inclusive answer to the question every kid eventually asks.
- LGBTQ+ Heroes (ages 8 to 12) · Fifty-one artists, athletes, scientists, and activists who changed the world.
- Ivy Aberdeen's Letter to the World, Ashley Herring Blake (middle grade) · After a tornado, a girl realizes she has feelings for another girl.

The point of a starter shelf isn't to be complete. It's to get you unstuck. Pick one, come back, tell us what you thought. Half the fun of this place is arguing about books at the counter — and the next recommendation is always better once we know what you loved and what you couldn't finish.
